Installing Diablo 2 Saved Games

So you've decided to download my saved games, but you have no idea what to do with the stuff you download?  We can fix that.  Follow these simple steps, and you'll be trying out your new games in no time.

Unzipping the downloaded file

A zip file is basically a container – a file that contains a bunch of other files.  You need to get at those files.  There are two ways you can do this.  First, if you run Windows XP (or presumably Vista, too):

  1. Find the file you downloaded (probably on your desktop).
  2. Double-click it.
  3. A window should open, showing the contents of the file.
  4. Keep that window open.  Proceed to "Installing the saved games."

Second, if you don't have XP or Vista, you can download a free unzipping utility, such as ZipGenius.  Getting ZipGenius installed is up to you.  But once you have it installed, come on back here.  This is how you unzip files with ZipGenius:

  1. Find the file you downloaded (probably on your desktop).
  2. Right-click it.
  3. In the popup menu that appears, select ZipGenius -> Extract Here, to filename (where "filename" is usually the name of the file you just right-clicked on).
  4. After a pause of a second or two, a new folder should appear, named similarly to the file you downloaded.  Double click the folder to display the files.
  5. Keep the window open.  Proceed to "Installing the saved games."

Installing the saved games

Now that you have the files unzipped, you just need to copy them to your Diablo installation folder.  This should be easy, but it requires you to have 2 windows open.  Try to arrange the windows so that you can view both side-by-side.  Here we go:

  1. If you have Diablo II running, shut it down.
  2. If you have a window open showing the files you downloaded, you're good.  If you do not have such a window open, do it now.
  3. Go to your Start menu, and find your My Computer folder.  Click it.  A new window should open.  (If you cannot find the "My Computer" icon, open your My Documents folder, and click the "My Computer" link that appears on the left side.)
  4. In the "My Computer" window, double-click into your "Local Disk" (usually the C drive).
  5. Next, double-click into your "Program Files" folder.  If you get a warning message, select the option to allow viewing of the folder's contents.
  6. Now double-click into the "Diablo II" folder.
  7. And now double-click into the "save" folder.  This is where Diablo stores your saved games.
  8. Now it's time to arrange both windows side-by-side, if you haven't already.
  9. In the window showing all the files you downloaded, select all the files (click-hold-drag to pull a selection box around the files).
  10. Drag those files over to Diablo's "save" folder, and release.  If you get a message asking if you want to overwrite any files, say NO!
  11. Close the windows, and start up Diablo II.  Start a normal game (single player, not online, not multiplayer).  In the character selection screen, you should now see your new characters.  If you don't see them, try the steps again, or find a geeky friend to help you out.  :)

Good luck with your games!  Have fun.
